West Coast training

Tassie 10 day cycle tour

10 Days/9 Nights (1260 km)

Starting in Hobart, then heading east to Launceston, and finishing back in Hobart 10 days later via the west coast, this 1260 km training ride over ten days takes the serious cyclist along Tasmania's spectacular yet challenging coastlines. If you don't have time for the entire ten days, this tour combines both the East Coast 4 day tour and West Coast 6 day tour so you can select a shorter option if you prefer.

Next Departure Date:
10 February - 19 February 2007

Itinerary:

Day 1
Saturday
10 February 2007
Hobart/Swansea (142km)
Head east to start the tour today and find your legs on the bike track out of town. Before lunch you'll hit "Black Charlies Opening", then "Bust-Me-Gall Hill" and "Break-Me-Neck Hill" in quick succession. A brilliant descent then a few ups and downs as you head towards the coastline. Enjoy views over the Freycinet Peninsula as you head into Swansea to spend the night beside the water.

Day 2
Sunday
11 February 2007
Swansea/St Helens (165km)
Cruise up the east coast today as the peleton makes its way to the east coast then heads north. Take a detour up the Elephant Pass then down the other side again. It's undulating smooth sailing all the way to St Helens for the night.

Day 3
Monday
12 February 2007
St Helens/Bridport (110km)
Leave the coast behind as you head inland for the rolling slopes of the north east. Pass hops farms, eucalypt plantations, small mining towns to the hub of the region at Scotsdale. This is a big day and the hills throughout the day are unrelenting, but keep your head up, once you've reached Scottsdale, head back to the coast and ride through to the coastal town of Bridport. Overnight in Bridport.

Day 4
Tuesday
13 February 2007
Bridport/Launceston (110km)
Keep the ocean to your right as you head along the coast to George Town, then down through the picturescue Tamar Valley and wine region to Launceston to finish the day and say goodbye to those on the 4 day tour.

Day 5
Wednesday
14 February 2007
Launceston/Sheffield (140km)
Today is the start of the 6 day West Coast tour, and there may be some new faces starting in the pack. It's an easy start to the day, head out of town to the historic towns of Carrick and Westbury, then stop for a break in lovely Deloraine. The mountains loam ominously all morning and this afternoon, you have no choice but to get amongst them. The Gog Range is legendary in cycling circles and it's waiting for you today. It's only a short day, but end with an uphill at Sheffield, town of murals.

Day 6
Thursday
15 February 2007
Sheffield/Tullah(114km)
More time in the mountains today as you head down then up the Cethana Pass towards Cradle Mountain in its World Heritage Listed National Park. No time to linger, continue on and up to Black Bluff for the King of the Mountain stage then race down the other side and its rolling hills into the Hydro town of Tullah overlooking stunning Lake Rosebery.

Day 7
Friday
16 February 2007
Tullah/Strahan (152km)
Lumpier than your mother porridge, the stage to Zeehan for lunch will test those unprepared legs. The road to Rees Dam is usually deserted, and the views spectacular but there's not a straight section on it. After lunch it's a relatively straighforward roll to the remote fishing village of Strahan.

Day 8
Saturday
17 February 2007
Strahan/Bronte Park (144km)
Head out the only other road out of town which takes you to the old mining town of Queenstown. Another King of the Mountain stage to the top of 99 bends out of Queenstown then it's a long downhill and completely flat around man-made Lake Burbury. Eat well for lunch, there's mountains ahead and Victoria Pass is not to be mocked. Once you're there though, it's along the plateau we go, exposed but flat, this highway takes you all the way to your accommodation tonight.

Day 9
Sunday
18 February 2007
Bronte Park/Hobart (151km)
An early spot of fishing this morning? Or perhaps sleep to gain as much energy as you can. Today is one of the longest days, especially for tired legs, but keep your chin, the majority of it is downhill. That's not to say, there aren't any uphills, come on, it's Tassie, of course there's uphills! Make your way into Hobart tonight - civilisation at last!

Day 10
Monday
19 February 2007
Hobart/Hobart (128km)
Explore the southern parts of Tasmania this morning on this, your last day in the saddle. Opt for the short version and head straight for the main destination of today - Mt Wellington. Standing at 1270m (nearly 4000ft) this ride takes you from sea level all the way to the top and back at around 8%. It's the satisfaction of reaching the peak that keeps you going. Three cheers all round, now head back to Hobart to celebrate over a well-deserved cold one.
