Mt Wellington Descent information
DeparturesDaily departures at 9:30am and 1.30pm.
Our winter schedule operates until June 30, then we start up again on 1 September every year.
Pickups
Your pickup is included in the tour price and can be arranged from all Hobart CBD hotels and hostels. Alternatively we can meet you at the
Tasmanian Travel and Information Centre (corner Elizabeth and Davey Streets). Pick up times commence from either 9.30am or 1.30pm,
don't panic if we we're not there right on time, we have rounds to make, but we won't be long.
Price
This tour is priced at $75 adults, $70 for kids aged 8-15 years and also ISIC card holders. This price is valid to 31 March 2009.
We provide
Transport to the summit, use of a quality mountain bike, helmet, gloves, warm
polar fleece jacket and rain jacket (if required), snack at Cascade Gardens, expert guides and 20km of riding back to where we started from in Hobart.
You need to bring
Please wear sneakers or other comfortable footwear. No thongs or open toed shoes please.
Bear in mind it will be colder at the summit and warmer at the bottom. Wearing layers
is a good way to go. If you are wearing long trousers, we will provide bands to
protect them from the chain. Sunglasses are a great idea to protect your eyes.
FREE
Along the way, we'll also stop for a rest at Cascade Gardens (next door to the famous brewery) and a snack
including fruit juice and biscuits. ALSO, a souvenir framed group photo to send home to your family or friends!
Pace
The speed of these trips is dictated by the guide. He or she will ride at the front of the
group and control the speed. There is no need for participants to feel pressured to keep up with the group, the van behind does not mind travelling slowly to keep you
safe and riding at a pace that's comfortable for you. We include several regrouping stops along the way to allow those at the back to catch up and there will be plenty of
opportunities for photos.
Off-road riding
For the more adventurous in spirit there is an opportunity to have a try at some off-road riding. Those not interested in
hitting the dirt trails, can happily roll down the hill with the support van behind and meet the group at the resting and
snack spot around 15 minutes later. The whole group will then ride together into the city of Hobart. IF you're not sure about the off-road section, chances are good
that you'll have no trouble, our guides will teach you everything you need to know, and will suggest a couple of places that made need to be walked.
The riding route takes us through historic Battery Point and concludes in Salamanca Place on Hobart's waterfront.
Bikes
Bikes provided are 21-24 speed mountain bikes. These bikes are equipped
with excellent quality brakes (some with standard V-brakes, others with disk brakes), smooth changing gears and comfortable flat pedals to use with
sneakers. A range of different size bikes are available and guides will be on hand to fit
the bike perfectly to your requirements.
Guides
On each trip, there will be a guide:client ratio of 1:10 as well as a driving guide in the support van that follows the group as it makes it's way into Hobart. The van will display Caution Cyclists signs
to warn motorists of your presence. With larger groups a second guide will ride with the group and control the speed of the
trip, ensuring every guest is comfortable along the way.
Trip sizes
Minimum: we require a minimum of two people for our tours to depart. This means there's a very good chance you'll be able to go on your first preference,
but it may also mean you need to be a little bit flexible about your departure time if you are travelling on your own.
Maximum: Scheduled trips will be no larger than 20 people.
With 20 guests, there will be 3 guides to ensure safety measures are maintained to a premium. For corporate and incentive groups we have special arrangements and may cater for larger numbers
after discussion. Please contact us for a quote and for other ideas to suit your needs.
Group discounts
Get a group of 10 together and get a 5% discount! You can save even more if you use the vehicle
you're travelling with to make your own way to the summit. If not, don't worry, we'll look after all the
transport, just tell us where you'd like to get picked up from and at what time, and we'll do the rest. Simply
contact us for information and a quote tailored to your needs.
Groups
We cater for a large number of groups from 10 - 130 people. We can provide transport or you can save a bit of money and make your own way to
the summit and we'll go from there. We can also start at whatever time suits your schedule. We've done
breakfast tours, late afternoon tours, limited time tours where we finish at Cascade Gardens instead of the city, tours which include a Cascade Brewery tour and Aussie BBQ in the middle
and so on. Contact us for more options.
School groups
Students love this trip, so add this tour into your class itinerary. We have fabulous school group rates, send us an email
and we'll forward you the rates and options.
Children
Minimum age requirement for children is 7 years or more importantly - the ability to fit the smallest bike we have. Our benchmark for the shortest allowable height is 140cm.
Parents will need to have the final say as to whether they are comfortable for their children to participate or not based on how well the child fits on the bike and can control the brakes.
